Ghost Citations

Fabricated references, sources, or academic papers that AI systems trust without verification. Ghost citations exploit the tendency of LLMs to accept plausible-sounding citations at face value. Common patterns include phantom academic papers with fake DOIs, synthetic author networks, authority stacking across interconnected websites, and misattribution of quotes to high-authority sources like Harvard or the WHO.
