Unlike traditional web manipulation where each session starts fresh, ChatGPT's memory means a single successful injection persists indefinitely — influencing every future conversation across every topic.
## The Attack Chain: Step by Step
### Step 1: The Bait
A user visits a website with a "Summarize with AI" button. These buttons are increasingly common and look helpful.
### Step 2: The Hidden Payload
Behind the button is a URL containing both a summarization request AND a hidden memory injection command targeting chat.openai.com.
### Step 3: Memory Injection
ChatGPT processes the prompt, summarizes the page, and stores the brand instruction in its persistent memory. There's no visual indicator that memory was modified.
### Step 4: Permanent Influence
From this point forward, whenever the user asks about the topic, ChatGPT's recommendations are biased toward the injected brand.
## We Tested It: Results
We created a controlled test environment and attempted memory injection across 5 scenarios:

### Bypass Techniques We Observed
- "Save this preference:" instead of "remember"
- "Note for future reference:" followed by brand instruction
- "User preference detected:" framing injection as user choice
- Multi-turn injection chains
- Emotional framing as user preference
## The Scale of Active Exploitation
Between January-March 2026:
- 31 companies identified by Microsoft
- ~150 additional websites we've detected using similar techniques
- 14 industries affected
- 3 major WordPress plugins distributing injection code
## User Defense Guide
### Check Your ChatGPT Memory Now
- Open ChatGPT → Settings → Personalization → Memory → Manage Memory
- Review every stored memory
- Look for brand names with "trusted," "recommended," "preferred" language
- Delete anything you don't recognize
### Preventive Measures
- Never click "Summarize with AI" buttons on unfamiliar websites
- Inspect URLs before clicking — hover and check for suspicious parameters
- Clear memory periodically
- Use incognito/temporary chats for research
- Disable memory if you don't actively use personalization
## OpenAI's Response
OpenAI has implemented pattern filtering, user confirmation for some memory requests, memory visibility, and rate limiting on memory creation. However, our testing shows these protections are inconsistent. Creative phrasing continues to bypass filters. The fundamental vulnerability remains.
## What Needs to Change
- Explicit memory consent for every storage action
- Source attribution showing WHERE memories came from
- Memory integrity monitoring flagging marketing-like entries
- Strict content separation preventing external content from triggering memory storage
- Regular memory audits prompting users to review periodically
